HPV Facts

1 : All around the world, in every 2 minutes one woman die due to cervical cancer that caused by HPV.

One and only cause of cervical cancer is HPV, because of that every 2 minutes a women loses teir lives and in Turkey everyday 2 women lose their lives.

2 : There are 4 types of HPV that cause the most HPV diseases in women.

There are 4 types of the virus you should know about - that's because they cause the most cases of HPV-related diseases in women. Each day in the United States, 30 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer (about 11000 women per year) and it is estimated that each minute there is a new case of genital warts in men and women. HPV Types 16 and 18 cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases and HPV Types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases.

3 : Every day, about 12000 people ages 15 to 24 are infected with HPV.

It is estimated that of the approximately 6 million new cases of genital HPV in the United States every year, 74% of them occur in 15- to 24-year-olds. That works out to be about 4 million cases a year, or 12000 a day. For most people, HPV clears on its own. But for some women who don't clear certain types of the virus, cervical cancer can develop. And there's no way to predict who will or won't clear the virus.

4 : An estimated 8 out of 10 women will become infected with HPV in their lifetime.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 8 out of 10 women will become infected with genital HPV in their lifetime. 5 : Many women with cervical cancer were probably exposed to HPV in their teens and 20s.

While half of all women diagnosed with cervical cancer are between 35 and 55 years old, many of these women could have been exposed to cancer-causing HPV types in their teens and 20s.

8 : Males can't get screened for HPV. So there's no way to know whether a guy could expose you to the virus.

It's important to know that right now there is no HPV test for guys. So even if your boyfriend wanted to get screened, he couldn't. So there's no way to know if he's exposing you to the virus.

9 : You can get HPV without even knowing it because the virus often has no signs or symptoms.

Many people who have HPV don't even know thay have it, bacause most often the virus doesn't have any signs or symptoms. That means they can get the virus without even knowing it.

10 : The treatment for genital warts can be a painful process and can involve cutting, freezing, or burning the warts.

There are several treatment options available for genital warts, including creams, removal by burning, freezing, or laser, and surgery. However, even after treatment, 25% of cases come back within 3 months. This is because the virus may still be present.

11 : You don't have to actually have sex to get HPV.

Anyone who has any kind of sexual activity involving genital contact can get HPV - intercourse isn't necessary. HPV is easily transmitted. In fact, you can be exposed to HPV by having genital contact just once with another person who has the virus. The only way to totally protect yourself against HPV is to avoid any sexual activity that involves genital contact.

12 : Condoms may not fully protect against HPV.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), condoms may lower the risk of HPV if used all the time and the right way. But HPV can infect areas that are not covered by a condom - so condoms may not fully proctect against HPV.

13 : About 2 out of 3 people will get genital warts after having any kind of genital contact with someone infected.

Genital warts are very contagious, and you don't have to have sex to get them from someone. You can get genital warts through any skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with an infected person-usually within 3 months of contact.

14 : In every 2 minutes, a women is dying from cervical cancer that is caused by HPV.

Cervical cancer, that is only caused by HPV, makes a woman die in every 2 minutes in the world. In Turkey, every day 2 women die, because of cervical cancer.

15 : Genital warts are caused by certain types of HPV.

Genital warts are caused by certain types of HPV (for example, HPV Types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases). The types of HPV that cause genital warts are different from the types that cause cervical cancer. Genital warts are usually flesh-colored growths that may be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large. Some may cluster to form a cauliflower-like shape.

16 : Even after treatment, genital warts can come back. In fact, 25% of cases come back within 3 months.

While there are treatments that can get rid of the warts, none can wipe out the virus. And since the virus is still present in the body, warts often come back after treatment-usually in about 3 months.

17 : All types of genital HPV can cause abnormal Pap tests.

Abnormal cervical cell are cells in the lining of the cervix that have changed in appearance. All types of genital HPV can cause abnormal cervical cells. The more severe the abnormality, the more likely cervical cancer could develop in the future. A Pap test looks for these abnormal cells before they have the chance to become precancerous or cancer. That is why Pap tests are so important.

18 : HPV is also linked to other cancers.

HPV can also cause less common cancers such as cancers of the vagina and the vulva.

19 : After being vaccinated for HPV, its essential that women continue regular PAP-Smear tests.

Being vaccinated with all 3 doses of HPV vaccine and visiting the doctor regularly to have PAP tests, are the best ways for protecting yourself from HPV. Eventhough the getting yourself vaccinated considerably decreases the risks, continuing medical examinations and PAP tests provide best protection.

HPV is short for a virus called human papillomavirus. About 30 types of HPV affect the genital area. Some types can cause cervical cancer. Other types can cause genital warts. All types of genital HPV can cause abnormal Pap tests.
